Fiberglass Pipe Insulation:
Fiberglass Pipe Insulation is a thermal insulation product used to retain the temperature of a pipe, either hot or cold. The pipe insulation is wrapped with an ASJ (stands for All-Service Jacket) which is a white reinforced paper that has a foil inner which reflects radiant heat. Owens Corning fiberglass pipe insulation comes with an ASJ Max which is ASJ jacket with a thin poly-top layer which allows the jacket to shed limited water, dirt, finger smudges etc. The ASJ Max jacket can be easily wiped clean with a damp paper towel or rag.
The fiberglass is a pre-formed tube which is hinged on one side to allow the insulation to be opened up and popped onto the pipe. The ASJ jacket contains a SSL seam tape which allows a secure seal at the 3ft linear seam. SSL stands for Self-Sealing-Lap and is basically a strip of adhesive covered by a wax release paper at the end of the ASJ Jacket. Simply take off the wax release paper and press the ASJ jacketing closed. SSL seam tape contains an acrylic adhesive which is "pressure-sensitive" which means you have to rub the adhesive to break the acrylic crystals to create a permanent bond.
Buy Insulation Products offers a complimentary butt strip tape. This tape is 3" wide and is measured to fit the outer circumference of the fiberglass pipe insulation. This butt strip is used to seal two sections of pipe insulation together at the adjoining butt joint. When you butt up two pieces of pipe insulation you will see a small amount of fiberglass showing beneath the ASJ jacket. This butt strip tape covers the fiberglass and adjoins the two ASJ jacketing sections together to maintain the ASJ air-barrier system. These butt strips are like the SSL tape in which they have to be rubbed in to create a permanent bond.
