Pipe Insulation Support Pegs With PVC Discs - Install Guide

When installing fiberglass pipe insulation, we will run into piping that is secured to the ceiling or wall with pipe hangers (clevis, etc).  If you simply install the pipe insulation, the location of the pipe hanger will crush or squish and look very unprofessional.  At these pipe hanger locations we highly recommend the use of a pipe insulation support.

What is a Pipe Insulation Support?

A pipe insulation support is higher density than the insulation being used which takes the weight of the pipe and prevents insulation "squishing".  Pipe Insulation Supports are non-conductive so they will not allow heat loss or condensation and most will maintain the vapor barrier of the system.

  • Fiberglass H-Blocks - High Density (18#) Fiberglass Insulation blocks
  • Cal-Sil Hangers - Sections of pipe insulation made out of Calcium Silicate High Temperature Insulation (not recommended on cold/chilled piping).
  • Wood Blocks - Similar to H-Blocks but just made out of wood
  • Support Pegs - Round wooden dowels adhered to a round PVC Disc with vapor barrier sealing adhesive.

In this post we will show you how to use insulation support pegs, which are the quickest and easiest to install insulation supports from the list above.

STEP 1: Find the pipe hanger location on a section of Fiberglass Pipe Insulation.  Try to line up your location of the pipe support as close to the center of the pipe shield as possible.

STEP 2: Cut a 3/4" round hold into the fiberglass pipe insulation with a knife or a Hole Carving Tool.

STEP 3:  Push downward on the Hole Carver and rotate if necessary. Pull out the fiberglass plug to reveal an even round hole in the pipe insulation.

STEP 4: Insert the Pipe Insulation Support Peg into the hole.

STEP 5: Press down on the PVC Disc which will create a vapor barrier seal with the rubbery adhesive on the inside of the PVC Disc.  You may also seal with ASJ Max Tape if necessary.
