NO-FRAME Fiberglass Edge Coating for Frameless Acoustical Panels

The market for DIY Frameless Acoustic Panel materials is growing and the number of panels that are being manufactured and installed without frames is increasing as well.  Beveled edges and intricate designs are easier to create with the fiberglass core panel rather than the acoustic panel frames themselves.  For example, try making a round panel with a wooden frame, its possible but you better be a carpenter or woodworker.  NO-FRAME Edge Coating allows you to make any cuts, bevels, or shapes out of fiberglass acoustic board and simply wrap the fabric over your newly shaped panel.

How Does NO-FRAME Edge Coating Work?

NO-FRAME is a water-based coating that can be brushed or rolled onto all of the finished edges of your fiberglass panel.  After 48 hours the white coating will dry and turn clear.  The coated edges and corners will be stiff and will not compress when wrapping with fabric.  NO-FRAME can also be used to coat the back facing of the panel to allow staple strips for the fabric or any other fastener.

Will NO-FRAME give off toxic odors?

NO-FRAME gives off zero VOCs and only gives off a slight odor when wet.  No noxious or toxic fumes like other fiberglass resins.  Once fully dry the coating will have no noticeable odor.

Can NO-FRAME be used on beveled edges?

Yes, one of the most common applications is over beveled fiberglass edges.  The edge coating will harden the beveled edge which will allow the fabric to be tightly pulled over the bevel to give the panel that professional look.

How hard will the panel edges be with NO-FRAME?

The stiffness of the edges depends on how heavy the coating is applied.  A single light coat will stiffen the edges enough to allow them to remain sharp enough for fabric to be installed directly to the panel.  The corners and edges will not "pillow", sag, or compress when the fabric is stretched across it.  If you need the panel edges to be rock hard, a heavier coating, or a heavy second coat may be applied to make a very rigid edge.  For rock hard edges and corners, it is recommended to coat a 1/2" to 1" overlap on the front and back faces of the board as well.  Once dried, a second coating can be applied to the edges if the hardness is not sufficient enough.

Do hardened edges block sound absorption?

Yes, the coating will create a barrier that will partially reflect sound absorption on the edges of the panel.  One thing to keep in mind is that a wooden, plastic, or metal frame will reflect almost 100% of sound while a stiffened edge with NO-FRAME coating will still allow partial absorption.

What is the coverage of a quart of NO-FRAME coating?

MetroFlex states that one quart will do approximately 8 panels of 2" Owens Corning 703 board (2ft x 4ft).  Coverage depends on how thick the coating is applied and the number of coatings used.
