Fiberglass Pipe Insulation, What Else Do I Need?

Posted by BIP on 28th Jan 2015

We find that a lot of our customers come to us for our most popular product, Fiberglass Pipe Insulation.  What happens is the customer finds the pipe size and insulation thickness, adds it to their cart and checks out.  That's fine, however a week or so later, we will notice a second order for that customer.  This second order will contain products  that they forgot or didn't realize they needed to purchase in the first place.

This article will highlight some of the other insulation accessories you may forget to add to your cart.

PVC Fitting Covers

PVC Fitting Covers:  These thin PVC covers come with a fiberglass blanket that is used to insulate the bare pipe fitting.  The PVC cover then goes over the fiberglass blanket to both protect it and give a clean appearance.  Most common PVC Fitting Covers are 90 Deg Elbows, 45 Deg Elbows, Tees, and PVC Jacketing.

King Tacks Stainless PVC Tacks

PVC Fitting Closure Products:  The previously mentioned PVC Fitting Covers do not come with a closure system.  King Tacks are white serrated stainless steel tacks that are inserted through the overlap of the PVC fitting cover.  King Tacks are recommended on hot systems (not recommended for cold systems).  PVC Vinyl Tape is used as a PVC closure system on cold systems (seals PVC covers).  Proto-One is a special adhesive used to seal PVC fittings, especially on PVC installed outdoors or in food processing facilities.

ASJ Tape

ASJ Tape:  We include one "butt strip" piece of ASJ tape per section of Fiberglass Pipe Insulation. The Butt Strip is used to seal the two sections of pipe insulation together.  With larger projects or projects that have lots of turns/bends, you will have to cut sections of pipe insulation to fit.  When you start cutting the pipe insulation, you will find that you need additional tape.  Tip: Each roll of ASJ Tape is 150ft long which will go a long way on smaller piping.

Aluminum Jacketing

Aluminum Jacketing:  Fiberglass Pipe Insulation comes with an ASJ paper jacketing which does not hold up well outside.  Aluminum jacketing and Aluminum Fitting Covers are commonly used to protect pipe insulation from the weather along with mechanical abuse.  Closure options for aluminum is either screws or fab straps.

Childers CP 11 Mastic

Mastic:  Whenever edges or cuts of fiberglass are exposed, we seal the fiberglass with CP-11 or CP-10 Vi-Cryl white mastic.  This mastic is a fibrous based paint which will seal the fiberglass from water.  Mastic can also be used to paint the ASJ jacket of Fiberglass Pipe Insulation to protect the jacketing from weather (great for use in exposed crawlspaces).  Tip: CP-11 is brush grade (most popular), CP-10 is trowel grade.
